Successful bid for cash will help improve allotments in West Auckland

BOOST: West Auckland allotments

A SUCCESSFUL funding bid will allow more allotment fencing to be replaced in West Auckland.

A further grant of £2,000 has been secured from the Gaunless Gateway to carry out work to the remainder of the fencing at the allotment site on Darlington Road.

The first part of the fence was replaced last year after the allotment association received £1,000 from the organisation as well as £1,900 from West Auckland Parish Council.

At last month’s parish council meeting, it was announced that the remainder of the fencing would be changed.

Cllr George Smith said: “We have managed to get another grant through the Gaunless Gateway to finish the fence off.”

It is hoped that the work will make the allotments more secure as well as improving the appearance of the site. Chairman Cllr Colin Mairs added: “Once we have got the money from the grant we will get in touch with the contractor to do the other side.”
