THREE CHEERS: The school council at Staindrop Primary School celebrate

YOUNGSTERS in Staindrop are celebrating after their primary school was ranked among the top two per cent in England for progress in all core subjects.

Staindrop Primary School was congratulated by schools minister Nick Gibb for the “very high” level of progress that pupils have made in their reading, writing and mathematics between key stage one and the end of key stage two.

In a letter to the school, Mr Gibb wrote: “We want to ensure that every child has the necessary fluency in reading, writing and mathematics to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond and your school has provided this.

“Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.”

Headteacher Steve Whelerton, who has been at the school for nine years, was thrilled with the acknowledgement.

He said: “It isn’t often you get a letter like that. We were absolutely delighted. We are very proud that our achievement has been recognised at such a high level. It is a testament to the hard work of staff, pupils and everyone else connected to the school.

“We approach the curriculum in a creative way so that it is geared around the children’s interests. That way we ensure the children are as engaged as they possibly can be. It is very tailored to their needs and as a result the children make progress.”

Mr Whelerton believes the success is down to the happiness of the children in school.

He said: “Although we are doing extremely well and the achievements speak for themselves, what should not be overlooked is our main priority as a school which is to ensure that the children are happy and cared for and have a desire to come to school. It is not just about the academic side. It is about all aspects of school life. If children are happy and confident in school they will want to come, they will enjoy it and then the achievements will look after themselves. It is an excellent recipe for success.”

In a recent national survey of primary schools, which looked at progress, attainment and attendance, Staindrop was ranked number one in Durham and 79th in England out of 14,624 schools.

Mr Whelerton said: “We have a few spaces available for September but not many.
