ANGLERS who spent time on the Tees this year were rewarded with some spectacular catches.
Barnard Castle Angling Club’s annual meeting was told it had been an excellent year for grayling, trout and salmon.
Olly Shepherd, who runs Fly Fishing Yorkshire and is a trustee for the Tees Rivers Trust, said salmon had been noted right through the Tees system.
Club secretary Gareth Hinchcliffe added: “I have had a great year. There is no shortage of fish.
However, when it came to the presentation of trophies, no-one could top John Robinson.
Mr Robinson took home silverware for catching a salmon on fly with the same £8lb 5oz fish earning him the prize for the heaviest salmon.
He also took trophies for a 6lb 8oz sea trout while a 5lb 12 oz rainbow trout was judged the outstanding catch of the year.
Gareth Hinchcliffe won cups for the largest trout on Colonel Watson’s water – a 2lb fish – and the largest trout caught on fly.
Mr Hinchcliffe’s 11-year-old daughter Isla won the cup for best junior.
The largest trout caught on bait was caught by Andrew McCrindle and Shane Jackson 23-inch brown trout earned him the trophy for largest trout.
