Sophie’s big chop for charity

An eight-year-old Montalbo Primary School pupil is making good on a charity commitment she made two years ago.

In 2024 Sophie Maude, aged only six, vowed to grow her hair long enough to be able to donate it to the Little Princess Trust to make a wig for a young cancer victim.

Her locks will be cut on October 3.

The plucky youngster said: “At school there was this thing about how to raise money for charity and what it was about, and I thought that would be a really good idea to do.

“I told mommy and we decided to do it.”

Her mum Nicola added: “It has been a couple of years in the making because it has taken a while to grow the hair.

“This was when she was only six years old and its only just got to the point of growth needed.

“We’ve not had a haircut for a while so it will be a big chop when it happens.”

Some 12 inches of hair is needed by the trust to create a wig.

Along with the hair donation, Sophie has also been raising cash to cover the cost of having the wig made.

The trust says £150 pays for a professional wig fitting, £550 covers the cost to make a wig, £700 pays the cost of providing a wig and £1,000 can buy new drugs for research testing.

Sophie decided to make £1,000 her target.

Her mum said: “I think we are up to £1,300, so she has smashed it.”

The big cut takes place at Hair Studio in Barnard Castle on Saturday, October 3, at noon.
