YOUNG folk from the dale have been honing their tractor and quadbike driving skills through a series of courses.
The sessions organised by Utass (Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services), saw Cockfield youngsters Joseph Kirkup and Grace Turnbull complete the Lantra Tractor Driving course, which is aimed at 13 to 15-year-olds.
Trainer Terry Maw explained that the one-day session focused on safety.
He added: “It is getting to know the tractor’s controls and instruments and for them to respect that when they are in the seat they are in control and the tractor is not the boss.
“It is also about respecting people around you.”
Joseph, 14, who began driving tractors last year, said: “We have been learning about safety warning signs.”
At the same time others were learning about quad-bike safety through a course offered by Deepdale Off Road 4×4 Centre, near Bowes.
Utass training co-ordinator Julia Stephenson said the Young Driver Training to Improve Opportunities programme was funded through the Wellesley Trust Fund.
She added: “As well as the funder we’d also like to acknowledge the help we receive from Karl Robinson, of Fillpack, who loaned us the tractor and trailer, and to Middleton Mart for the venue, as well as to Carrs Billington who on this occasion are loaning us a quad for the two days.”
