S&A prize draw will fund goodie bags for elderly residents in Teesdale

NUMBERS GAME: Fundraisers Steve McKie

KIND-HEARTED staff at a dale builders’ merchants are hoping customers will call in to their Barnard Castle branch in the lead up to Christmas to take part in a prize draw for charity.

For the past 13 years, S&A Builder’s Merchants based on Harmire Industrial Estate in Barnard Castle, has organised the numbers draw, where customers pay £1 and pick a square between 1 and 1,000 to win prizes from wine to chocolates.

Alison Thackray, purchasing officer at S&A, said: “We’ve done the draw for lots of years and we get the prizes for the draw from our suppliers. Last year there were lots of different things up for grabs including a Scalextric and computer tablets.

“And the money we raise we give to a different charity each year. This year we decided we wanted to do something a little bit different, so we’re going to give out Christmas goodie bags for the elderly in Teesdale and hoping to distribute them through day centres.

“We also have a branch at Crook and we’re hoping to help them organise something similar over there.”

Last year kind-hearted staff managed to raise more than £800 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and are hoping they will be able to match this amount this year.

She said the company has already prepared special linen bags for the goodies which include festive treats including Christmas cake and puddings.

Ms Thackray added: “We would love to hear from any of the day centres in the dale so we can include them in our delivery once the draw has been made.”

The draw will be made on Friday, December 14, so there is plenty of time to drop in and claim a number at their Barnard Castle branch.

Anyone running a day centre for the elderly in Teesdale who would like to speak with Ms Thackray about receiving goodie bags can contact her on 01833 696935 or email on [email protected].
