Read all about it… children win £200 book tokens

PRETTY PICTURES: Harry's colourful entry has won top place in a contest. He is pictured with runners up Matthew

A COLOURING competition has netted £200 of book vouchers for a dale primary school
Artistic pupils at St Mary’s RC Primary School, in Barnard Castle, beat off competition, winning the top prize in a national colouring competition.
The pre-Christmas contest organised by Together with Music, a charity that aims to build links between the generations, provided festive fun for the children and they were delighted to learn this month their artistic efforts won top spot.
Sarah Fells, a teaching assistant at St Mary’s, said: “As part of the Together with Music project we used to visit residents at the Manor House, performing songs for them. But that came to a stop with the pandemic.
“The project linked us up using Zoom so we were able to continue the singing sessions. The children would perform and then the residents would send messages back. We did do an outside carol concert for the residents before Christmas, performing in their courtyard, and it was then we were invited to take part in the contest.”
Together with Music provided two pictures for the children to colour for different ages.
It was the colouring of key stage one pupil Harry, from Larks Class, who was named overall winner, picking up £200 worth of gift vouchers from Waterstones.Three of his fellow students – Matthew, Sam and Ava – were runners up. The gift vouchers will be used to purchase books for the school library with each of the four classes getting to decide on which to buy.
Harry is hoping his favourite author Tony Ross will be among one of those chosen.
Lesley Box, headteacher, said: “We’ll definitely be entering more competitions in the future.”
