Rainbow gardeners help village bloom

TAKING ROOT: Members of Middleton's Rainbow pack with their potato bags

A GROUP of Rainbow Guides got their hands dirty helping their upper dale village’s effort in an environmental competition.

Middleton-in-Teesdale Rainbow pack have been planting potato and sunflower seeds which will form part of the village’s entry into the Northumbria-in-Bloom competition.

Middleton has won gold in the competition for the past two years and was recently visited by competition officers for the spring judging. The youngsters’ efforts will come under the judges’ scrutiny when they return later in the summer.

Middleton-in-Bloom organiser Pam Phillips said: “They all took home a nine litre bag which they had filled with compost and planted with a seed potato.

“They also planted up a lot of sunflower seeds, each taking one home while the rest will be used to plant out around the village hall.”
