RESIDENTS have raised £433 towards the cost of a defibrillator by holding a raffle.
Friends and neighbours Rita Roberts, Janet Baker and Sue Sellars came up with the idea of organising the raffle to fund a life-saving heart-start machine. The women, who all live in sheltered accommodation at Bowes Lyon House, in Barnard Castle, gathered donations for prizes which included a toaster, kettle, vouchers as well as chocolates and wine.
Tickets were sold far and wide, pulling in £433. Ms Roberts said: “The first two tickets we sold were to people in France so we did manage to get the word out.”
Ms Sellars said: “We’re going to put the money towards a defibrillator and hopefully Homegroup will make the money up we need to purchase one. We all feel having one here is essential.”
The raffle was drawn on Thursday, March 31, with help from other residents when the winners of all 24 prizes were announced. A list of the winning numbers is displayed at Bowes Lyon House.
