YOUNGSTERS at a dale school have received a tree-mendous accolade for their green activities.
Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary School bagged a gold award from the Woodland Trust for planting trees, visiting a local woodland, reducing carbon emissions and recycling.
The Green Tree schools initiative, which has seen almost 10,000 schools sign up since it was launched in 2008, offers the opportunity to bring the great outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom. The pupils at Bowes have planted saplings in its grounds, including fruit trees, used its own forest school woodland and invited other schools along to enjoy the facilities. Staff have worked with the Woodland Trust to teach children about nature and sustainability. Headteacher Chris Matthewman said: “Our collaboration with the Woodland Trust has helped us in the delivery of a broad and meaningful curriculum for the children and they had great fun.”
Karen Letten, Woodland Trust schools and communities engagement manager, added: “The scheme promotes a range of opportunities, each designed to stimulate a child’s imagination and sustain their interest in woods and trees. As they reach milestones within the project they will receive bronze, silver and finally an attractive wooden plaque.”
