CHILDREN are throwing their support behind an anti-dog fouling drive in Gainford.
Pupils from Gainford Primary School heard from campaigner Evie Hole-Todd that one in ten people do not pick up after their pets when out dog walking.
The businesswoman provided children with a number of incredible facts, including that there are about 13.5 million dogs in the United Kingdom, which generate about 3,000 tonnes of dog mess each day.
Ms Hole-Todd, who runs dog walking and behaviour business Wuffalo Walks and Talks, told the children that there are a number of risks created by dog poo because it carries diseases brought on by parasites and bacteria.
There is also a danger of blindness if it comes in contact with a person’s eye.
As part of the campaign children will be designing posters aimed at highlighting the problem.
The posters will be judged by Gainford Art and Design Society (GADS) with the top three being printed and put up in the village.
After assembly Ms Hole-Todd showed the children how to make dog poo bag dispensers out of milk cartons, which will also be put around the village.
l Apologies to Evie, who we incorrectly named as Ellie in the Mercury of May 15, and good luck with the campaign.
