Pupils’ efforts add up to success for Montalbo Primary School, Barnard Castle

SUCCESS WITH SUMS: Headteacher Chris Minikin celebrates with children from Montalbo Primary School after the school emerged in the top one per cent in England for achievement in mathematics

WHEN it comes to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, people can count on the children of Montalbo Primary School, in Barnard Castle.

The sum of their efforts in mathematics has added up to recognition from the Minister of State for School Standards Nick Gibb.

In year six, all pupils reached or exceeded the expected standard in mathematics putting them in the top one per cent of schools in England.

Headteacher Chris Minikin said: “It was a lovely surprise to receive a letter from the minister. The school governors and I are proud of all the staff and children for their hard work and excellent results.

“We have had strong academic results in each key stage over the last few years and it is nice to be recognised. As a school we are committed to a well-rounded curriculum where all subjects are valued and important.”

He added that the school had recently taken on the White Rose Maths scheme which helps children with maths fluency and problem solving.

In a letter to the headteacher Mr Gibb said: “We want to ensure every child has the necessary fluency in mathematics to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond, and your school has provided this to all your pupils.

“Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations to you and your staff for all you have achieved.”
