Primary children help wage war on litter menace

Children from Toft Hill Primary School armed and ready to root out the rubbish

CHILDREN from Toft Hill Primary School braved a chilly day to help root out rubbish during Etherley and Toft Hill Parish Council’s annual spring clean.

The enthusiastic youngsters took to the task with gusto, delving into the undergrowth to pick up litter from in and around the village football field. Armed with picking sticks and bags they searched out discarded waste.

Among the litter they managed to pick up was a foot-

ball boot, a fake phone and

a number of plastic containers.

It is the tenth year the council has organised the litter pick, which aims to keep the village looking its best.

Etherley Parish Council clerk Alison Overfield said: “We do have an employee who does this on a daily basis throughout the parish so litter is not a big problem in the village, but the wind does blow things on to the area next to the football field.

“We do think it’s good to get the children involved so they realise that people shouldn’t drop litter.”
