Praise for response to emergency in Cockfield

GOOD WORK: The emergency services were praised for their response when high winds hit Cockfield

THE emergency services, Raby Estates and Northern Powergrid have won high praise from parish councillors for their quick response when strong winds wreaked havoc in their village.

Power went out and telephones went dead in Cockfield on Thursday, June 14, when gusts of up to 54mph tore through the village, knocking down trees and power lines.

Cockfield Parish Council expressed its gratitude for the response during their July meeting.

Chairwoman Cllr Brenda Singleton said: “I must admit, what they did was fantastic. The police turned up in no time whatsoever, and the fire service.

“Northern Powergrid were coming down the road while I was talking to Raby. He [Raby Estates’ forester] turned up in less than ten minutes and cut it down and took it all away.”

Cllr Neville Singleton added: “She got rapid response from the electric company because there were cables all over the place. Then she phoned the police. Then she phoned Raby. By that time, while she was on the phone calling Raby, the electric board rapid response were flying down the road.”

The chairwoman said all of the services kept ringing her back providing updates on work that was being done.

She said: “You complain when it isn’t alright, so you should say thank you.”

The council agreed to write a letter of thanks to each group involved.
