Poignant book sale at dale art centre

AVID READER: Books from the collection of the late Julia Wright

A MUCH loved supporter and volunteer of The Witham, in Barnard Castle, is continuing to support the art centre months after her death.

Julia Wright was an active fundraiser for the arts centre, was the first person to join its Friends scheme and helped out at the box office, before she died aged 80, earlier this year.

Now her collection of hundreds of books have been donated The Witham for a massive book sale on September 28, at 10am.

Proceeds from the event will go to the arts centre.

Mr Wright was well known throughout the dale, dedicating her time to a number of causes and organisations including a care centre for the elderly, U3A and her church.

Her friend Lusia McAnna said: “She was an amazing lady. She loved life and she was a very caring person. She would help anyone where she could.”

Trained as a teacher, Mrs Wright, who lived at Eggleston, was a leading light in U3A and served as its chairwoman for a year, as well as secretary.

Mrs McAnna said: “She was a really interesting person and very well read. She never stopped learning.

“We all miss her like mad. She has left a Julia shaped hole in all out lives.”

Her collection of books reflect many of her passions in life, including, history, wild camping, sailing, politics and motorbiking. Along with non-fiction, the collection of more than 20 boxes includes a large variety of novels.
