Over £3,000 raised in memory of Staindrop’s Darrel Chapman

Well-wishers have raised more than £3,000 for the Richardson Community Hospital in memory of a Staindrop man.

Darrel Chapman’s family was so impressed with the care he received in his final days that they wanted to do something to support the valuable community asset.

“The care we had there was just unbelievable,” said Mr Chapman’s wife, Madeleine. “It was so calm, and that really helped us at such a difficult time.

“We really appreciated it, and we decided to raise some funds. It’s such a lovely hospital and we need to keep it in our community.”

The money came from collections at Mr Chapman’s funeral and wake, as well as an online fundraiser set up in his memory following his passing on June 23. His funeral took place on what would have been his 65th birthday.

And Mrs Chapman was amazed at how many people got in touch and made a contribution.

“It was very touching to see how many people recognised and remembered him,” she said. “I can’t thank our family and friends enough for everything they have done in his memory, that’s a really incredible tribute to him.”

The Chapmans moved to Staindrop 16 years ago. Previously they had lived in Darlington, where Mr Chapman worked as a taxi driver.

And the family found a warm welcome in the dale. “When we came to Staindrop, Darrel immediately made friends here,” said Mrs Chapman. “He was just that kind of approachable person, he was happy to chat to anyone and everyone.”

After a cancer diagnosis in 2019, Mr Chapman battled the disease for six years.

“He took every treatment that was going, he fought it and fought it and did really well up until the last months,” Mrs Chapman added.

“We hope the money can be used for some kind of lasting tribute at the hospital, but really it’s for them to decide because they know better than us what they need.”
