SIXTEEN Barnard Castle homeowners are throwing open the gates of their gardens this jubilee weekend to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Ukraine.
Organised by neighbours Annie Clouston and Mike Way, gardens along Newgate, The Bank, the Demesnes and Thorngate will be open on Sunday, June 5, between 2pm and 4pm.
Ms Clouston said: “We have a great mix of back gardens and little courtyards. Some are very private, walled gardens and some will feature beautiful displays of potted plants on the street.”
Maps, indicating all participating properties, will be available for a donation from a stall situated at Amen Corner. Visitors will be able to take a gander at the variety of gardens and chat to owners
Mr Way said: “We have only done it on a low-key basis before but it is a great way to get to know your neighbours and exchange ideas as well as being sociable.
“In the past we have done plant stalls as well but we decided to keep it simple this year.”
Three years ago, 17 households took part in the open gardens event raising £1,000 that was split between the town’s Christmas lights group and the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
Ms Clouston added: “It’s basically the south east quadrant of the town and all the properties that are taking part will have a Ukrainian flag outside.”
