CHILDREN have helped to build a bird hide which can be used by nature lovers across the dale.

The new feature at The Hub, at Shaw Bank, near Barnard Castle, has been put up in a nature area developed over the years by volunteer Graham Moore.

Holly Scott, of The Hub, said a large number of birds, including great-spotted woodpeckers, starlings, goldfinch, magpies and oyster-catchers, were attracted to the area.

She added: “We get birds of prey as well. We have buzzards and a sparrow hawks.”

The nature zone at The Hub has become a favourite spot for birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers in general.

As well as other areas around The Hub, new bird boxes have been put up near the hide.

Mr Moore said: “There are just five at the moment but we are making more.”

Young people turned out to help build the hide after responding to a call put out by volunteers on social media.
