TEESDALE’S new police inspector Ed Turner was among 80 officers who were presented with bravery awards at Downing Street, in London.
While off duty, Insp Turner was thrown onto the bonnet of a moving vehicle after confronting a dangerous driver in Northallerton two years ago.
He attended a special reception at Downing Street before being presented with his bravery award by Nick Hurd, minister for Policing and the Fire Service.
Mr Hurd said: “It is right we honour the commitment and dedication of all the officers nominated for the national Police Bravery Awards.
“We are grateful for your service and your courage is an inspiration to us all.”
Andy Jackson, chairman of Durham Police Federation, said: “The bravery and professionalism shown by Insp Turner went above and beyond the normal call of duty.
“He showed exceptional bravery, putting his own life at risk to stop a dangerous driver and ensuring that no one else was hurt.”
Insp Turner has taken over as neighbourhood inspector for Teesdale from Inspector Kevin Tuck.
His most recent post in his 24-year career was as an inspector for the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit.
