Mini-Pittuck exhibition raises cash for care of town mural

TOWN ART: Charlie and Paul Ing with the remaining Pittuck paintings now on display at their Ingnet antiques shop

NINE paintings that were part of an exhibition of work by Teesdale artist Douglas Pittuck have gone on display again, this time at an antique shop.
Last month more than 250 people visited the two-day event, which featured 26 Pittuck paintings, at St Mary’s Parish Hall, in Barnard Castle.
It was held to raise funds so the newly restored Pittuck mural will be preserved for future generations.
The exhibition, organised by the Pittuck Mural Group, raised more than £2,000 from the sale of some of the paintings donated by his daughter Susan Skelton, catalogues
and Pittuck-inspired merchandise.
Jenny White, from the Pittuck Mural Group, said: “Susan visited with several members of her family and they were delighted by the exhibition and the restoration of the mural. They were very appreciative of the affection and interest in which her father is still held by local people.”
Selected paintings at the exhibition went on sale using a sealed bid system. Although there were plenty of bids, nine of the paintings remained unsold. Those are now being hung at Ingnet Antiques, in Barnard Castle, where they are available to view and buy.
Antique dealer and group member Paul Ing said: “Fortunately, we had enough space in the showroom to be able to put them on display and it’s almost created a second exhibition.
“The Pittuck family will be benefitted and money will go to the preservation fund. We wanted to do this to bring closure to the exhibition.”
Copies of the exhibition catalogue, which features a biography of Mr Pittuck, along with photographs and descriptions of each of the paintings and a record of Barnard Castle School artwork produced by scholarship pupils inspired by the mural, are still available for sale. Anyone interested in purchasing a catalogue at £6 plus postage should email [email protected].
