Middleton play park reopens as improvements to equipment are considered

OPEN: Wesley Terrace Play Park

PADLOCKS have come off the gates to Wesley Terrace play area, at Middleton-in-Teesdale, which was closed at the start of the school summer holidays because of fears it was unsafe to use.

After consultations with two specialist play equipment companies, which advised that by removing swing chains and seats the park would be safe, Middleton-in-Teesdale and Newbiggin Parish Council agreed to open the playground again.

A working group with ten volunteer residents and three councillors has been formed to look into the cost of updating the play area equipment.

The working group will be split into four to focus on the issues of consultation, planning, fundraising and external grants. Parish clerk Judith Mashiter said quotes have been requested for play equipment and different scenarios including purchasing new items as well as looking at refurbishing what is currently on the site.

Ms Mashiter added: “It is going to cost much more than we have in the budget and it may be worth looking at increasing the precept for next year.”

Cllr Christine Gilbert said: “I think the parishioners will be okay if they knew what they are being asked for.”

Members agreed the play area will remain on the council agenda until further notice with the working group reporting back with the information.
