Meeting over proposal for HGV ban

BUSY ROUTE: Heavy lorries driving through the town centre in Barnard Castle.

A HGV action group is to be invited to outline its plans for a scheme to reduce the number of large lorries passing through Barnard Castle

Members of Staindrop Parish Council agreed they would like to hear from Barnard Castle HGV Action Group on the proposed scheme, which would ban vehicles which have no business in the town.

They are organising a joint meeting with other parish councils at Scarth Hall, in Staindrop

Members were worried that if vehicles started taking the moor route from Brough to Teesdale, it could mean a lot more heavy goods traffic through Staindrop.

Clerk Judith Mashiter said concerns had been raised

by both Mickleton and Middleton-in-Teesdale Parish

Cllr Roger Humphries said: “This is a double edged sword and urging them [Durham County Council] to build this relief road.

“But I don’t see any harm for them to explain.”

Cllr Marion Rodham said: “I’m always surprised by the number of large HGVs coming through the village during the night. There is more than you think.” Details of the meeting will be announced at a further date.
