Meet entertainment on The Demesnes will be eco-friendly

HARD AT WORK: The Meet showground committee TM pic

ENTERTAINMENT and live bands will return to the lower Demesnes during Barnard Castle Meet this year

And the volunteer group charged with organising the fun aims to make it as environmentally friendly as possible

Showground sub-committee member Martyn Maughan said the group wants to reduce the amount of waste, especially plastic, the event may generate.

He said: “We’re particularly keen on pushing recyclable or compostable ‘serve ware’ from vendors on the Demesnes. The sale of bottled water will not be permitted and we’ve already contacted bulk fresh water suppliers.”

Mr Maughan added terms and conditions have been finalised for food and drink sellers for the showground area and applications are open for companies to get in touch. He and his fellow committee members have already been in touch with previous suppliers and successful applicants will be notified by the beginning of March.

“By getting this done early it gives us two months to look for additional providers if it is necessary,” he said. “We’re really keen to support locally sourced food and specialist produce.”

Fellow committee member Shona Robinson said: “The bar and bands set up will be the same as 2018 and we’ve already got a number of local bands signed up to provide live music including The Banned and Geriatric and the Pacemakers.”

Anyone interested in receiving information about tendering for food and drink pitches at the Meet should contact the committee on 07894 119495.
