Major expansion planned for Co-op garage shop

LARGE EXPANSION: The Co-op service station in Barnard Castle

PLANS are being drawn up for a £2million redevelopment of a Barnard Castle fuel station and convenience store.
The Co-op hopes to more than double the size of the existing store at Prospect Place. The proposals, yet to be submitted to Durham County Council, include replacing the shop with a larger more modern store, as well as new fuel tanks.
James Carter, from the Co-op, said: “There is an opportunity to carry out a transformational redevelopment at our Barnard Castle site, which would significantly enhance and improve the service our store provides for the community.”
The new store would have an increased range of fresh food, as well as everyday essentials.
