Little gardening gurus spruce up school

TAKING ROOT: Yvonne Arkley and members of the St Mary's RC School lunchtime gardening group

A LUNCHTIME gardening group at a Barnard Castle primary is helping add a dash of colour to the school grounds.

The group, at St Mary’s RC Primary, is led by one of the parents, Yvonne Arkley, whose team of green-fingered children have been hard at work digging, weeding and planting bulbs. Head Lesley Ann Box said: “It’s an opportunity to develop the interest of our gardeners and their skills – and it’s a lovely community link with parents. The project for the summer is to improve our Mary Garden. That is our prayer garden and it is in need of a bit of TLC.”

Ms Box added: “Blue and white are significant colours of Mary so we are looking at plants that feature those.

“We are hoping to invite some members of the community and parishioners to have prayer sessions in there.”
