MIDDLETON-in-Teesdale residents came out in force on Saturday to celebrate the Christmas lights switch on, one year after the event had to be called off following a massive power outage due to Storm Arwen.
Forecast rain didn’t arrive and led to a bumper turn-out to witness the village’s three carnival queens Skye Crawford, Lila Hodgson and Sydney Mitchell flick the switch.
Middleton and Teesdale Silver Band provided musical accompaniment for rousing renditions of a few Christmas carol favourites.
Christmas lights committee member Ian Tallentire said it was wonderful to see so many people at the event.
He added: “The forecast for rain didn’t materialise, which we are grateful for and it’s not too cold.
“We have quite a few changes this year with not quite as many lights, but we have a plan to keep renewing and replacing lights when we can.
“We are always grateful for funding for the lights and we’re very thankful for all the support from all those who help us.”
New for 2022 were competitions for the best decorated business and private home. Compere for the evening, Bob Danby, announced the honours for these were won by 2 Parkin Row and Utass, for its depiction of an advent calendar. Although there was no visit from Santa Claus on his quad bike, as the man in red will be making doorstep visits to youngsters prior to the big day following on from the success in previous years.
The festive fun continued into the evening with a family night at the village’s Sports and Social Club.
