Knitting group is helping out the heroes

COLOURFUL EFFORT: Margaret Gibson

ITEMS knitted for a First World War exhibition at The Bowes Museum have been donated to the veterans’ charity Help4Heroes.

Knitting groups, who produced socks, hats and gloves from original First World War patterns for the For King And Country exhibition at the museum, met weekly for knit and natter sessions to produce knitted and croqueted blankets for the charity.

The items were handed over during a final meeting at the museum. They will now be used at Help4Heroe’s Phoenix House, at Catterick.

The charity’s events co-ordinator Abigail Richardson was on hand to receive the items from museum archivist Judith Phillips, who organised the knitting groups.

Ms Richardson said: “They are fantastic – it is something different. They are really appreciated at Phoenix House because so much time and effort has gone into it.”

As well as knitters from Barnard Castle, a Spennymoor-based group also became involved after reading about the project online.
