Keeping harvest festival tradition alive in Cotherstone

FOOD COLLECTION: Pupils at Cotherstone Primary School didn't let the pandemic get in their way

PRIMARY school pupils have managed to continue their annual harvest festival collections despite coronavirus.
Jane Batchelor, from Cotherstone Primary School, said: “Usually, we encourage the children to bring tins and food packets into the school which are then collated and taken to the local church for a harvest festival service and our offerings are donated to a worthwhile cause. However, this year we were unable to visit the church and bring items into school from home, so this is how we worked around it.”
The school asked Morrisons, in Barnard Castle, if they would donate a trolley for a week and the business agreed. The school placed it outside of the school for families to donate during drop and pick up times – safely. Ms Batchelor said: “The children were excited to see the trolley filling up with food items and the visual effect helped others as a reminder to bring donations in.”
It was decided that the items would be sent to TCR The Hub, in Barnard Castle, who have been and “still are doing an amazing job” delivering food parcels to more than 80 households a week.
Ms Batchelor added: “The children and families have done an amazing job this year to continue donating for their harvest festival, adapting, and working together with the community to keep the tradition running.”
