UNABLE to celebrate his 100th birthday last year because of Covid-19, Mickleton Lunch Club pulled out all the stops for member Dougie Bloor’s 101st birthday last week.
A balloon arch, cake and sparkler, and live music were the order of the day as the club made up for missing out on the retired farmer’s landmark birthday last autumn.
Mr Bloor was in fine form on the day singing songs from George Formby and regaling friends with his stories about attending county farmers’ balls in his youth.
He said: “The ladies were all in long dresses and the men in tails. Dressing up is a thing of the past – you don’t see that anymore.”
Of his milestone birthday, he said: “It was lovely to get a telegram from the queen [last year] – I don’t think she will bother now I’m 101.
“I’ve enjoyed a long life – you only live once so you have got to. I have had a good innings and batted well.”
Lunch club leader Kim Weston, who visited Mr Bloor on his hundredth last year, said: “He has such a cheerful disposition and he is always singing. His favourite is George Formby’s Leaning on a Lamppost. She added: “He is a lovely, lovely man.”
Musicians James Dykes and Eddie Tinkler led the club as sang Happy Birthday ahead of the cake being cut.
