A BARNARD Castle primary school’s dedication to educating youngsters in English and maths has earned staff and pupils a prestigious award.

She added: “We applied for a basic skills award because we knew we work exceptionally hard in both these subjects.”

Assessors, who visited the school earlier in the year, were in agreement.

Ms Porter said: “We are delighted to be recognised for the amazing work all our staff put into ensuring our children, regardless of ability, make excellent progress in both maths and English.

“The assessors came in and were so impressed with the work at St Mary’s they didn’t have to come back because we were meeting all the measurements of the quality mark.

“We dedicate so much time to planning and preparing a creative, engaging and inspiring curriculum at St Mary’s and it is always lovely to receive an award.”

The teacher added St Mary’s already holds an accreditation award in science and will now be looking to work towards others.
