Ingleton pupils create their own school banner

THUMBS UP: Artist Vicky Holbrough with children from Ingleton Primary School who helped produce the banner

CHILDREN at Ingleton Primary School have unveiled a new banner they have designed and made themselves with the help of artist Vicky Holbrough.

Elements in the banner, which include a horse chestnut tree, a rainbow and a crucifix, were chosen by the children. The artist held several sessions with the children to complete the design.

Headteacher Judith Pressley said the horse chestnut, which is also part of the school badge, was chosen because of a similar tree in the village. She added: “It’s been there a long time and it is a perfect place to get conkers.” She added that the rainbow reflects promises, with a number of promises written along the roots of the tree.

Ms Holbrough said the leaves of the tree included the handprints of every child in the school and were made using light sensitive solution, which developed much like a photograph when exposed to the sun. The background of the banner includes prints of photographs from the past and present. Also featured are the sundial and bell that were carried over from the old school building.

Ms Holbrough said the children also wanted bees to be a key element.
