Ideas sought for stone’s new location

ON THE MOVE: The guide stone inside the entrance of Utass' offices

PEOPLE in Middleton-in-Teesdale are being asked for their views on where a guide stone, carved initially for the village’s heritage centre, should be placed.

The massive stone is currently in the entrance of Utass’s offices, in Chapel Row but parish councillors want to put it somewhere in the village for all to enjoy.

It was suggested during their January meeting it be placed near the Bainbridge Fountain.

But Cllr Christine Gilbert said: “If we carry on putting things around the fountain, you will no longer be able to see the fountain. It is just a load of clutter around there. We could do with less, not more.”

Cllr Lynne Oxby suggested it be placed further down towards the doctors’ surgery.

The council agreed to put up posters around the village to get people’s thoughts on a perfect location.
