Hot award for Barney butcher’s spicy African sausages

MEAT AND GREET: Dave Higginson

A SPICY sausage has earned William Peat Butchers, in Barnard Castle, yet another accolade to add to its impressive awards list.
The butcher shop earned a star in this year’s Great Taste Awards for its unique Arabic lamb sausage.
In previous years the shop has earned Great Taste awards for its black pudding and pate.
Dave Higginson, whose family runs the butcher shop, said he looked up a
recipe for the north west African sausage a few years ago because of customer demand, and after “some tinkering” came up with the sausage that is now on sale.
He added: “It has a bit of heat to it and it has a complex combination of spices. It is a bit of a speciality – we mainly sell it to restaurants.”
It also earned praise when it was promoted at Bishop Auckland Food Festival in previous years.
The butcher, who kept the shop open throughout the coronavirus lockdown, said business had been “up and down” during the crisis.
Mr Higginson said: “The Eat Out to Help Out was record-breaking for us.”
