STARTFORTH residents are being invited to help bring a little cheer to the dark winter nights by decorating their homes as part of the village’s Christmas Sparkle competition.
With rising energy costs, the parish council is keen to highlight that the annual contest to find the best illuminated home is more about the overall effect than the number of lights.
Clerk Judith Mashiter told members of the parish council last week there had already been interest from residents who were eager to take part.
Cllr Peter Worley said: “All these new LED Christmas lights don’t use much electricity, but it’s not about how many someone has but what they do with them.”
Cash prizes of £50, £30 and £20 will be awarded to properties in first, second and third place.
Households wanting to be part of the contest, which is free to enter, will need to contact Ms Mashiter either by email before judging on Monday, December 12, when the Teesdale Mercury’s editor, Trevor Brookes, will choose the property he feels brings the most “sparkle” to the village.
