HUNDREDS of thank you cards from grateful people across Teesdale were delivered by the sackful to shop staff and Royal Mail employees in tribute for the work they did during the coronavirus lockdown.
The delivery was made as part of the Barney Does It Best scheme, which had thousands of thank you cards printed for key workers.
Profits from the sales of the cards are destined for local good causes.
Some 200 cards made out to Royal Mail posties and a further 200 for staff at the Co-op, in Barnard Castle, were hand-delivered by Barney Does It Best co-ordinator Peter Smith last week.
Another 160 were delivered to Morrisons on top of hundreds that had already been dropped off.
Mr Smith said another favourite of grateful residents were the county council’s refuse collectors.
He said they will receive their thank-you cards in the near future.
Royal Mail delivery temporary officer manager Jamie Orpen, who has been in charge for about four weeks, said it was great that the posties were getting recognition.
He added: “Since I have been here I have noticed just how customer focussed they are.
“It has been a very tough time for them.
“There have been a lot more parcels – more than at Christmas. It is unprecedented.”
Postie Laura Bromwich described the huge pile of thank you cards as overwhelming.
She said: “It is lovely recognition. It has been one community working together.”
Mr Smith said about 1,600 cards had been sold since the scheme began.
