STAINDROP Guides and their parents have given a new lease of life to garden benches and a picnic table at the Almshouses, in Staindrop.

Kevin Allen, clerk to the Almshouses Charity Trustees, said: “The Guides and parents did a really fantastic job.

“The residents will be able to enjoy spending time outside on the spruced up benches and having a picnic using the table.”

Karen Thompson, Staindrop Guide leader, added: “We are thrilled to be involved in this project. It’s great for the girls to learn new skills as well as do something for our community.

“I am very proud of them.”

The 12 Almshouses were built in 1860-61 by Henry Vane, the 2nd Duke of Cleveland, and have be modernised at various points since then.

The Henry, Duke of Cleveland Charity, was registered with the Charity Commission in 1905 and provides housing for persons in need of accommodation, who are over 60 years of age, not in full-time employment and have a local connection to Staindrop.
