ORGANISERS of Barnard Castle’s traditional Meet are hoping to festoon the town with Union Jacks for this year’s event, which coincides with the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
The Meet committee has already invested in 900 metres of red, white and blue bunting for the event, which will be held a week later than normal, on June 4 and 5.
They are keen to add a little extra “patriotic” decoration in the town and are looking for sponsors for up to 50 flags that will be mounted along the parade route.
Colin Glasper, from the Meet committee, said: “For many of us, we have not seen or probably won’t see an event like this again and we feel this achievement is one to celebrate, given what the world has endured over the past two years. We would like to have the town decorated with as much bunting and Union Jack flags as possible. We’re asking for any businesses, organisations, families, groups of friends if they would like to sponsor a flag.”
The handmade flags will be mounted on poles, fixed into brackets that were put in place for the Christmas lights.
He added: “There are about 50 brackets already in place from the top of town to the bottom and they will be relatively easy to put up and it will add something a little extra to the town, especially as it’s a jubilee year.”
The cost to sponsor a flag is £40 and the closing date for orders is Friday, March 18, to allow for them to be made to order. For more information about sponsoring a flag or to make a donation, contact Mr Glasper on 07989 604526 or email colinglasper@yahoo.
