THERE was still something to cheer at a scaled-back Middleton-in-Teesdale carnival despite Covid-19 putting paid to the full event for second year in a row.
The event is traditionally one of the biggest carnivals in the dale, and although Covid restrictions had eased, the organisers were unable to secure insurance for the whole event.
Instead they put together alternative activities to ensure there was still something to enjoy this summer.
Cycle races, mask decorating, a carnival trail, treasure hunt and a sporting themed scarecrow competition went ahead with residents, young and old, taking part.
McFarlane’s Butchers won the top prize for best decorated shop, with the Co-op in second place and Middleton Care in third.
Jack Allen and Tommy Heys, from The Hude, got the top spot for their horse and ride scarecrow and eagle-eyed James Docherty spotted all the clues in the carnival trail.
Leah and Ben Fletcher won the “what’s wrong in the shop window” competition. The California Explorers knew where X marked the spot in the treasure hunt.
Organisers thanked everyone for taking part and are looking forward to next year’s event when it is hoped
everything will be back to normal.
