CARE Home residents in Barnard Castle unable to visit The Bowes Museum enjoyed the next best thing when exhibits were brought to them.
The exhibition of Queen Victoria’s visit to Paris was presented by the museum’s education officer Julia Dunn during visits to The Manor House and Charles Dickens Lodge last week.
This follows a successful outreach programme last year when the Wallace Collection was taking into the community.
During the visits Ms Dunn showed residents copies of various painting made during the queen’s visit as well as clothing and materials from the period.
She said: “These paintings were a record of her visit and were given to her as a souvenir at the end of the tour.”
The series of painting starts with the arrival of the Royal Yacht at Boulogne and includes scenes of a parade through Paris and the bedroom where she stayed.
Ms Dunn said the aim of visiting the care homes is to engage people who might not otherwise be able to visit the museum and also to rekindle memories and stimulate memories, particularly with those who are living with dementia.
She added: “We recognise not everyone can access the museum so we will come out to them.
“It is just nice that we built that relationship with the Wallace Collection and we are continuing with that.”
