GARDENERS across the dale have expressed their sadness at the sudden closure of a popular, family-run nursery which closed last month after 57 years.
Ravensworth Nurseries shared the news on social media they were closing with immediate effect on Friday, July 28.
A spokesperson for the company, started in 1966, said: “It is with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts, that we have to announce Ravensworth Nurseries is closing with immediate effect.
“What started with the sale of a few tomato plants on the side of the road, which turned into a family business that we have put our hearts and souls into for the last 57 years.
“However, the culmination of lockdown, rising bills, and the ongoing cost of living crisis means sadly we have reached the end of the line.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our many, many loyal customers; you have trusted us year on year to fill your gardens and homes with our plants, veg and flowers and we are so grateful for your enduring support.
“We would also like to thank our amazing team. We simply could not have been in business as long as we have without all of your hard work and dedication.
“We have loved every minute of this incredible journey, and we will miss you all.”
Residents across the dale expressed their sadness at the news but wished the team well for the future.
Sandie Truten, from Barnard Castle, said: “It is really sad to read this. We first became customers during lockdown when you delivered bedding plants and tomato plants to us.
“You helped bring us colour to our little garden and find a new hobby when it was the only place we were allowed to be.
“It’s so sad to see so many small businesses going the same way due to the current climate. I dread to think what the future holds for others.”
Middleton-in-Bloom volunteer Pam Phillips added: “This is such sad news. You will be sorely missed, especially by Middleton in Bloom. Thank you for all the help we’ve received from your team, especially Fiona and Wendy.”
Catherine Ryan, from Boldron, said: “Such sad news. I remember coming when you sold tomatoes only and was always a regular customer. I will miss my regular visits.”
Allyson Todd from Staindrop said: “Such sad news. I have bought from you from the early days.
“I remember it was a day out with my mum and gran year after year with boots-full of bedding plants transported up the A66 to our farm at Bowes. I wish the whole team all the best and many thanks for all your hard work over the years.”
