CHILDREN at a dale school learned about life as a doctor as part of a project looking at “people who can help us” .
Cotherstone Primary School welcomed Dr Tamsin Coulson to talk to youngsters in the pre-school and years one and two about her job.
Dr Coulson, whose son Joseph and daughter Annie go to the school, is a GP at Catterick Garrison.
She told the children that there were many different typed of doctors – showing them a picture of her time in the Royal Army Medical Corps, which included tours of Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia. Dr Coulson explained how some of her friends had gone on to work with an air ambulance service and overseas and that doctors played an important role in a number of different sectors, such as sports clubs.
She told pupils that she enjoyed being a GP, looking after everyone from the very young to grandparents, and that each day at her surgery was different. She had drawn an outline of three-year-old Annie and children were asked if they could pinpoint different areas of the body, such as hands, feet, the brain and heart. They were shown x-rays and asked if they could spot the broken bones. Dr Coulson had also brought her stethoscope along so the pupils could listen to each other’s heartbeat and she demonstrated how to bandage a wound.
Pre-school teacher Jennie Lee said: “Each school topic we are doing is about people who can help us.
“It is important to have visitors in school and it’s brilliant when we have parents who do so many amazing jobs that we can get them to come in and recognise them.”
She said it was hoped future visitors would include a vet and a member of the local mountain rescue team.
