Covid haircuts’ raise cash for NHS workers

CLOSE CUT: Group founder Alex Humphries

AFTER posting a photograph of his friend’s haircut online, a Staindrop man says support for his social media group, Covid Cutz, has taken off.
More and more people are now shaving their locks to help raise funds for the NHS workers.
Alex Humphries, 26, of West Terrace, said: “I just posted a picture of my friend’s daft haircut and it sort of grew from there.”
Mr Humphries, who is a mental health worker, founded the Facebook group with friend Tom Alexander, and in less than a week have got more than 1,700 members. He added: “I thought it would generate a bit of fun – a distraction from everything that is going on at the moment, but it’s gone nuts – loads of people are getting involved.”
People are sending in videos or pictures of their DIY haircuts.
“We have to realise that life has changed a lot and mental health for a lot of people at the moment will be an issue – we just thought this would brighten up people’s lives.
“I think it is imperative that people can have a lift just now to keep their spirits up, as a lot will be struggling, but I never thought it would take off like this,” Mr Humphries said.
With the help of friends Ben Alexander, Grace Howard, Scott Richardson they have launched a fundraiser, setting a target of £1,000 which will be donated to NHS staff.
Mr Humphries still had a full head of hair until last Friday but kept his promise of shaving off his locks into a Mohican when the group reached 2,000 followers.
He added: “Tom [Alexander] shaved his head when we got to 1,000, but I held out until we doubled that.
“We did set a target of raising £1,000 but hopefully we’ll smash that as we’ve managed to raise £400 in a week.”
