Cockfield pupils help raise hundreds of pounds for Butterwick Hospice

TOP EFFORT: Milly Toner

A KIND-HEARTED dale school has given out more than £300 to a palliative care cause.

Cockfield Primary School’s “Emerald” house opted to give £332.70 it had raised in recent months to the Butterwick Hospice, in Bishop Auckland.

A table top sale, a “reindeer” run and a school-wide sponsored silence help boost the coffers ahead of the cheque handover.

Milly Toner, fundraiser at the Butterwick Hospice, was delighted with the school’s efforts.

She said: “We use all the money to provide care services, daycare and home care – it just helps keep the whole thing going.

It’s great to see kids getting involved because a lot of youngsters think hospices are the same as hospitals and it’s nice for them to look around.

“It’s a lot friendlier than people think – hospices are not all doom and gloom and can be nice places to be.”

Butterwick staff have visited a number of Teesdale schools to help spread its message.

Teacher Fay Gregson added: “We had a lovely assembly from the Butterwick and last week we had a school-wide 30 minute silence.”
