Cockfield Primary School is a class act

READ ALL ABOUT IT: Cockfield primary headteacher Kathryn Heatherington and teacher Emma Woods with pupils after they heard that their school ranks in the top one per cent for reading in England

A NEW reading scheme has catapulted a dale primary school into the top one per cent in the country.

Children at Cockfield Primary School were in celebration last week after receiving a letter from the minister of state for school standards Nick Gibb confirming their achievement.

Mr Gibb said: “Your school’s results show that 100 per cent of your pupils reached or exceeded the expected standard in reading at the end of key stage 2. This means that your school is in the top one per cent of primary schools in England for achievement in reading.

“Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and tour staff for all you have achieved.”

Headteacher Kathryn Heatherington attributed the success to an “accelerated reading” scheme that had been introduced at the school. It sees children reading a variety of books and then doing fun activities such as quizzes.

She said: “They love to read. They will sit in the corridor and read. They sit outside and read. I am really proud of the work the children do, and the staff who have worked so hard.” She also praised parents who encourage their children to read at home.

Pupils Evie Armstrong and Eva Longstaff said they felt “special” and “proud” .
