A DEDICATED young carer has been recognised as Teesdale Police’s latest young hero.
Charlie Appleton was nominated for the award by one of his teachers at Staindrop School.
The 16-year-old cares for his mum, Paula, and gives vital support by helping with shopping, cooking, cleaning and other jobs.
And despite going above and beyond what most teenagers would do, Charlie is still an exemplary student and maintains high standards at school.
His hard work paid off with his recent GCSE results and he is now looking forward to studying photography at Bishop Auckland College.
Charlie was presented with his award at his home in Cockfield by Acting Sgt Harry Marsh who said Charlie was an inspiration to other young people who often have to balance caring for a family member with other commitments.
Charlie’s teacher, Chris Hughes, and one of the award sponsors Keith Hodgson, from Hodgson’s Taxis, also congratulated him as he received his award.
Mr Hughes said: “Charlie has worked tirelessly in lessons to ensure he has the best possible chance of passing all of his GCSE exams and somehow managed to find a perfect balance between revision and supporting at home which shows fantastic maturity.
“We are all very proud of him at Staindrop Academy and wish him the best of luck in the future at college.”
Mr Hodgson added: “I am really proud of what Charlie has achieved and wish him good luck for the future.”
He is the fourth of 12 winners and will be invited to a special awards night next year where one youngster will be crowned the ultimate hero.
