CHILDREN have picked their own carnival queen for their village’s big annual event.
Pupils at Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary School voted who should be Bowes carnival queen then in a time-honoured tradition they decided on the make-up of the full carnival parade entourage.
This year it includes: carnival queen, Elisabeth Webb; retiring carnival queen, Sophie Watson; herald, James Tiplady; queen’s attendant, Georgia Hollyoak; flower girls, Georgia Cullerton and Emily Luck; crown bearer, Aidan Marmont; pages, Ollie Gibson and Josh Williams.
The theme for the carnival fancy dress is “on the farm” .
The weekend kicks off with a fun family football event for adults and youngsters over nine. This will take place on Friday, June 8, on the school field. Players should arrive at 5.45pm. Kick off is at 6pm. All players need to wear shin pads. On Saturday, June 9, the carnival fancy dress parade will be led by the Teesside-based Rhythm Train samba band. After the judging of the fancy dress there will be more fun on the school field – bouncy castles, side stalls, games, music from Barnard Castle Band, morris dancing from Rumold Morris and family entertainment provided by Professor Pumpernickel.
In the village hall from 6.30pm and 8.30pm there will be a family games night with a disco. The annual family sports including the hugely popular welly wanging contest will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, June 10.
It will conclude with the draw of the annual carnival raffle. Further timings and information will be available nearer the time from committee members.
The committee is appealing for volunteers who can help out on the Saturday or Sunday. Contact one of the committee members, Mike Bettison, Rosie Bettison, Graham Henley, Tracy Luck, Lynn Todhunter, Janet Williams and Jason Williams.
