There are promising signs for Startforth Community Centre – but more volunteers are always welcome.
Three potential new trustees have come forward following a “use it or lose it” appeal in August.
At the time, there were warnings that the centre might close its doors permanently if new management could not be found.
Now there’s a call to establish a wider pool of volunteers to support the potential incoming trustees and work towards securing the centre’s future.
“Three potential trustees would meet the minimum required by our charitable constitution,” said Jayne Cox, who serves as a liaison between the community centre and Startforth Parish Council. “Now we have put out a call to establish a wider pool of volunteers.
“We’ve had a positive response so far and if enough people come forward to volunteer, which is looking likely, we will hold a meeting in November to see if we can take it forward.”
The community centre is described at the “beating heart” of Startforth.
At a time when the village is growing rapidly, public services and facilities have not kept pace with development.
The centre, which occupies the former village school, plays a vital role, hosting a nursery and other children’s activities, coffee mornings and social groups, fitness classes, arts and theatre groups, and public meetings.
“It’s very much business as usual,” added Cllr Cox. “The community centre is still available for bookings and the main hall can accommodate and cater for up to 100 people. Smaller rooms are also available for smalling gatherings or a cosier atmosphere.”
Becky Welsh, whose late grandfather Colin Clarke was instrumental in starting the community centre when the school closed in 2016, posted on social media:
“This space is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a lifeline for the lonely and elderly and a place where friendships form, ideas grow and memories are made.
“Losing it would impact not just Startforth but the wider community that depends on it.”
People are encouraged to volunteer and help with fundraising, events and day-to-day operations. And everyone can support the centre by coming to the monthly Community Café, which raises funds for the upkeep of the building.
The next two dates are Monday, November 3, and Monday, December 1, 10am to 11.30am.
