BEAUTIFUL blooms, perfect produce and a whole lot more contributed to a bumper Middleton-in-Teesdale chrysanthemum and vegetable show on Saturday.

Extra tables had to be laid at Middleton’s Sports and Social Club to cater for the number of entries, much to the delight of organisers.

Secretary Anthony Coatsworth said: “It’s been an excellent show this year. Entries are up cross the board – we’ve struggled to get everything into the room.”

He explained that the event’s origins as simply a chrysanthemum show was the reason it was held so late in the year.

“Later chrysanthemums are shown at this time of year – it was the national show this weekend as well.

“They are grown outside until the middle of September – usually Eggleston Show weekend – and then brought inside where you have to keep them well ventilated.”

Mr Coatsworth added: “We’ve got some new chrysanthemum growers entering this year – it’s as many chrysanths as we have had.”

John Grey took home the cup for best chrysanthemum in show, receiving his trophy from Ali Collinson, representing the sports and social club.

Barry Watson enjoyed a successful show, taking home trophies for most points in vegetables plus cups for his onions, beetroot and collection of veg.

Mr Coatsworth’s pair of carrots earned him the trophy for best exhibit in vegetables.

Mary Elliott accumulated most points in produce, while Grace Crawford’s delicious pie was judged best exhibit in produce.

Pam Phillips won most points in the photo section, with Elizabeth Beach taking the trophy for best photo.

Ryan Carter collected the cup for most points in the children’s classes.
