Budget for private investigator increases

Barnard Castle Town Council

TAXPAYERS are facing an increased bill for a private investigator called in by Barnard Castle Town Council after a member of staff was suspended.

It was revealed earlier this month that the investigation is linked to an officer who has been away from their post since February.

The suspension has been discussed behind closed doors at a number of council meetings and it emerged that councillors agreed in March to spend up to £1,000 from their reserves employing an investigator to compile a report. Council minutes from April now show this figure has risen to £2,500. On top of this, councillors agreed to set a budget of £1,500 for mediation between the two parties.

The council has refused to confirm the identity of the suspended officer or give any details of the allegation levelled against them. The council has also declined to say whether the officer continues to be paid while suspended.

Another staff member is being paid to work extra hours to cover the absence.
