Bringing legends of the dale to life at Green Lane school

Bryony Staley demonstrates her talent with the cymbals

CHILDREN from Green Lane Primary School have used their creative talents in art, writing and music to produce work about the mysteries of Teesdale.

Pupils in years four and five descended on St Mary’s Church, in Barnard Castle, where they interpreted the legend of Peg Powler and the River Tees into a variety of creative pieces.

One group gathered around the church organ where they listened to a story about the evil water spirt that inhabits the river written by Kim Harding and together with church’s music director Annette Burrows produced a piece of music using violins, cymbals, xylophones, triangle and other musical instruments. Mrs Harding said other groups of pupils produced creative writing and pieces of poetry based on the legend as well as the weather in the upper dale.

A third group used their artistic talents to produce paintings and drawings.
